who remembers having to go down into the basement of the school for violin lessons with Mrs. Farkas, or having to go down and sit in the corridors of a different part of the basement during air raid drills?

Hey Ellen.

Sure, I remember the basement violin lessons with Mrs. Farkas. She made us use a dry sponge where our chins fit into the chin-holder; it was disgusting.

Wow- I remember playing the violin, too, with the dry sponges... I also remember giving a concert and Steven Kuchuck's strings broke in the middle of the concert. He pretended to keep playing as he walked off the stage.

Those were the good old days...

Yes, Ellen that basement was scary. How about hiding under the desks for an air raid drill? I was a chalk board eraser monitor at some point which involved going into a special room and placing the dirty chalk erasers on a vibrating machine that got the chalk out and vacumed most of it into the machine. Most of it was not all of it and you end up breathing in much of the chalk dust. If I ever have any respiratory problems in the future, my lawyers will be contacting the school!

I remember those air raid drills in the basement! I also remember as we were marching down there, I'd always see the custodians, Millie or Jimmy, standing off to the side, leaning on a mop. Millie would be cracking her gum and Jimmy would be scowling at us!!!

What I'd really like to know is something that I have wondered about for years....we were told that the highest paid employee in the school was not the principal or senior teacher but the head janitor - Jimmy! Can we find him in the Cayman Islands to ask him?

I remember Jimmy the super. Mr. Ricca would make an announcement over the loud speakers: 'Please don't leave your chewing gum in the bathrooms; poor Jimmy and Millie have to clean them.'

oh my god, I haven't though about millie or jimmy in years and I can see their faces and millie's thick stringy gray hair--clear as day. DO you remember the "back way" down to the gymansium-- there was a staircase which let you out at the back of the school near where the guys played stick ball, but inside was a stairwell, leading to the back door of the gym- i remember, it was sort of creepy when mrs glaubman took us down to the gym this way---
