Hi,
I just sent some e-mails to some of the old gang and maybe I can call him later. When I was in the neighborhood last summer I asked a few people about him but didn't manage to find him. He was a good guy though I guess I haven't seen him in over 30 years, but I rember what an amazing athelete he was. refuah shlema

Michael,

I am very sad to hear about what Mitch is going through. I'm not sure if he realizes it but he has touched so many lives including mine. Mitch had a big influence on who I would become as an adult. I have very vivid memories of playing basketball, softball, football and any game you can think of at Vleigh, 164 and Park Drive East with Mitch. Please let me know how he's doing. While I'm not in a position to get him a job, a place to live or the kind of money he would need to help him find a place, I would certainly take him out for a nice lunch if he is able or send him a small donation if it would help. I live in Newtown, PA which is about a half hour from Princeton.

Good news...Mitch has moved from Queens General Hospital to a nursing home in Elmhurst Queens. Although not the most ideal conditions, it's a major step up from where he was. Mitch now has some more freedoms and can come and go as he pleases. Mitch does not have a phone as of yet, so contacting him is challenging. The good news is his spirit is up!

Hi Michael - I'm sorry I didn't see this thread sooner. Thank you for looking in on Mitch and for letting us know what's happening. If you'd tell him Rick Hendra said hello, I'd appreciate it. And I'm wondering if you could help me with something else. I sent a check to the Reunion Committee today for a ticket for Mitch. Seems to me he's got to be there, for more reasons than I can say.

But I don't think it will be easy to get him there. Would you sound him out on it? Let him know it's a done deal, not an offer? Don't even tell him it was me, or he'll feel obliged to return it or something - just say that a bunch of us chipped in? And maybe find out what it would take to get him there and back? I think I still know my way around Queens.

I was sorry to see you weren't on the list of those attending. But Andy Steele and I are going, and we were Mitch's classmates, friends - and teammates when we won the Queen County Community Center Basketball Championship back in '63, or whenever. Mitch knows Danny Perlman, who will be there, and I'm sure there's other folks Mitch will know on the list. Pat's still accepting latecomers for the Reunion, so I'll be trying to pull in some other old friends. They should have dedicated this event to Mitch - it would have helped the turnout. I don't think there's anyone who knew more folks at PS 164 over a span of more years.

So let's see if we can get him there?

Rick,

What a wonderful gesture on your part. I have signed up for the reunion and would be very happy to personally pick up Mitch and get him there and back. I had lunch with Mitch last Monday after not seeing him for almost 30 years. I can only tell you that it was a special treat for both of us.

Thank you Harvey! That really is a help - I don't know Elmhurst too well, and it has been a long time. Glad to hear you guys got together for lunch. That's probably the best tonic for his spirits, just knowing folks really cared enough not to forget him.
