You probably don't remember me - I was shy and geeky back then - but when I saw your name I had to write to you. In fourth grade, during recess, while on line in the school yard, I threw up on you (specifically, your shoes). This led to a horrible nickname I carried until leaving 164. Kids can be so cruel. But, it's ok...I forgive you now. I see you've done more than your share for children. Seriously, I applaud you on your accomplishments and might have even crossed your path, taking my son to Schnieder years ago.
Best regards,
Terry Loeser
I remember having many wonderful conversations with you throughout the years (i.e. from your elementary school through your pre-college days ....not since then!). I also remember meeting you somewhere on Vleigh Place during the week you were accepted to Stuyvesant and hearing the good news from you!
By the way, I thought about you 10-15 years ago when an "Andrew Steele" wrote an Op-Ed or letter to the editor in The New York Times. I wasn't sure if it was you -- and although here I am "remembering" everything, I am ashamed to say that I don't remember what the topic of the piece was! Sorry, but it was good -- exactly what I would have expected of you!
Best regards,
Robert
I just found this PS 164 web page after being alerted by my cousin. I graduated from Downstate in 1975, never knowing that you went there. What year did you graduate? I am a radiologist practicing in Potomac, MD since 1979. Potomac is about 20 minutes outside DC. I have 3 children, 2 still in MD and one living in Manhattan.
Hope you are well.
Yours truly,
Allyn Cohen
I was interested to see you got your BA in English. I always envied you your math skills and don't remember talking books with you much. Don't remember running into you in my English courses at UB either, which is a little surprising because I took a minor in it. Wasn't at all surprised to see you got your MD from Downstate, however, or that you've done so well in your career.
I don't think I ever saw Marty Starkman at UB either. He was heading towards med school too. I'm thinking there might have been one or two others on that track that I somehow never seemed to run into at UB either. Do you recall who else was there? I ran into Rona Herskowitz at UB once, but I might have been married by then (my wife and I were hitched after my junior year), and I looked like a counterculture dropout anyway. She looked great. She pretended not to recognize me and hurried on. I didn't blame her.
Any idea what happened to Marty? It was Marty who got me to apply to UB instead of the Navy. I'd about given up on college after studiously avoiding high school (all I remember from those years is sports and sci fi and my parents yelling), but Marty got me an app to UB and sat there while I filled it out. Probably the best turn anyone ever did me.
Sounds like you're not in a position to have much fun with your responsibilities, but do you still play any chess or b-ball? I hung out with a guy from the Chess Club at UB and got to where I could give him a good game (as opposed to actually beating him). But I've only played occasionally since I got married. I still play basketball, though, three times a week, religiously.
I'd love to hear from you when you get a chance...
Rick
