- About Me:
- I entered our beloved P. S. 164 in the fall of 1948 in the 4th grade, the year the school first opened its doors. I had Mrs. Goldblatt in the 4th and 5th grades. (What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger!) and a wonderful Mrs. Reingold in the 6th grade, and graduated in the spring of 1952.
I am married to my college sweetheart, Arlene, and have two children, two grandchildren and one more on the way and live in Sherman Oaks, California. I am a Ph.D. Conservation Biologist and the Executive Director of the International Society for the Preservation of the Tropical Rainforest and author of three best selling books on tropical rainforests and their destruction.
I was Nature host and producer of science on four-time Emmy award-winning 14-year running TV program, “Elementary News;”
co- founded Africa Tomorrow (addressing sub-Saharan famine), the Cathedral Rainforest Science Preserve in Costa Rica, the Fossil Ridge Paleontological Park in California and assisted President Clinton in formulating the National Conservation Strategy.
In northern Sumatra my son, Gandhi, and I co-discovered a new species (Rafflesia micropylora), a parasite whose 38 inch, 38 lb. flower is the largest in existence.
I am the recipient of the Southern California Motion Picture Council Humanitarian Award for “Outstanding Contribution to Humanity,” as well as the National Humanitarian Award honoring “America’s Best Role Models.”
P. S. 164 was the friendliest, most nurturing dream school imaginable. I remember in “music appreciation class” being taught “We are Tenting Tonight in the Old Camp Grounds”, an old Civil War song, Union, of course, by the grey-haired music teacher (forgot her name – any help out there?) who was, I believe, in her 80’s and would have learned that song in her youth during the Civil War. Every elementary school should aspire to Queens Valley school’s caliber of academic excellence. Remember all the historic U.S. documents we memorized. Our school represents the Golden Age of America’s educational apogee.
