Glee Club

Does anyone remember the Glee Club and the teacher? I remember being in one of the plays, The King and I.

I always thought that the Glee Club teacher was our music teacher -- Mrs. Farkas. At least, she was the one who ran Glee Club when I was in it, several years after you. My brother, Ruben Perlmutter, played "the King" in *The King and I.* Do you remember him?

My brother, Ruben, probably has photos. You can find him on the website and email him and maybe he can send them to you. Better yet, it would be nice if he sent them to Patricia so she could post them for all to see :-)

The Glee Club teacher I remember was Mrs. Bromberg. Mrs. FarKas played the piano. I think I go back a little before you. We did South Pacific and Oklahoma.

Hi Dale - I know you don't remember me....I was younger than you. I was one of the "little kids" (4th grader) who sang "Di tam wa (?) in South Pacific. I had a pony tail made out of wool for the show. But I remember you. You were a "Star" and had one of the leads. Which song did you sing? I can't remember but I can still see you. You were kind to the "little kids".You had a beautiful voice and I really looked up to you - my dream was to be a star. Oh well, I am a social worker now. Do you still sing? I do. I recall Mrs. Farkas handling the Glee Club. I tried out for it when I was in 4th grade. I think that was the year they did "South Pacific" ('74 or '75.) I remember several of us went down to the music room in the basement where Mrs. Farkas was seated at the piano. We lined up in the back of the room and told her what song we would sing, and if she knew the music, she would play. When it came time for my turn, I told her my song was "Kodachrome" by Paul Simon. She didn't know the music so I just started singing....... "When I think back on all the crap I learned in high school it's a wonder I can think at all, and though my lack of education hasn't hurt me none I can read the writing on the wall...." I will never forget the shocked look on Mrs. Farkas' face..... :-) Needless to say, I never made it into the Glee Club!

I didn't make it either. Wish I could have chosen my own song. I go back to Dale's day, when Mrs. Bromberg ran the Glee Club. We had try-outs in class, and she chose what we were to sing. I was given "Ah, Great King..." from Verdi's Aida (Mrs. B was an opera buff). We'd learned it in class, but I was way out of my league there. I had the voice of a 12 year old Dylan, unsuited to suitable music.

She mercifully assigned me to be a stage hand instead, until the rehearsal when I licked the microphone for laughs. It was on, and it was like my tongue fixed to it - I spazzed like Daffy Duck with his finger in a socket till someone pulled it off me. From there, I was relegated to the audience, which I handled with great aplomb, Mrs. B. assured me...

The glee club was run by Mrs. Farkas. When I was in it we did Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance. I remember rehearsing by sitting in the auditorium and singing from the seats while Mrs. Farkas played the piano. I remember she would always get everyone "ready" to sing by playing two chords.
