Mrs. Sondike is in the Class 3-1, 1961.
I am in the first row, last on the right hand side.
I can tell you just about every student's name in that picture....I missed a few though-

I believe that her first name was Elsie, Mrs. Elsie Sondike.
All she ever ate was cottage cheese, claiming to be on a diet!
All she ever talked about with the other teachers was "retirement".
Then there was that "inspection" on assembly days.......

cottage cheese yes! and yes it was elsie! she said one day we'd appreciate inspectionm when we were on a dancefloor dancing w a men lol and w the handwriting stuff I didnt develop my own handwriting till I finally got into 4th and we could hold a pen however felt comfortable!

Mrs. Sondike told me and a few others to mouth the words of the songs we sang at 6th grade graduation. It's a bit extreme to say I was "scarred by it" but I never sand aloud again without being self-conscious. I'm not bad at carrying a tune, so either my ear has improved, or she was extremely particular, or a little bit of both.

I recall that very well. Some of us were not allowed to really sing. I was certainly in the mouthing group.

Let's arrange a visit back to 164 during the Bowne 67 45th reunion in 2012.

That's her alright! I remember the class having to go through "inspection" on assembly day. Your nails had to be trimmed, your neck scrubbed clean, and your shoes shined. I also recall being traumatized by her penmanship lessons..."you must DANCE across the page!"..."I should be able to place a NICKEL on your wirst and it should NOT fall off!". She was something else :)

I still have nightmares of her penmanship lessons. She used to tape your wrist to the table if the nickel fell off. She also made you sit with your hands folded for what seemd to be hours a day.
