PS 164 Alumni

The 5 & 10 was Park Variety. Then we had Dottie's, Hollywood Cleaners, the dress store, Barry's Laundry and Jack the shoemaker. and don't forget the barber
with the horse chair for us little kids.

Does anyone remember when Jan's ceramics took over the corner store on Vleigh...Wasn't there a pizzeria there once too....I remember Liz Torrents introducing me to my 1st Calzone there when we were on a lunch break from religious instructions at Queen of Peace!! My Dad eventually owned Rocco's Bar for awhile.....Matt Haley....Spent a lot of time there!! :)

The pizza place was inbetween the bar and barber shop.
I think the corner store was a drug store or pharmacy as we call them now.
I used to leave my dog at the bar with Gil in the morning so I could play
softball. Gil kept her behind the bar by the ice. Nobody ever bothered Gil
while the dog was around.

I remember that pizza place - Tony's, wasn't it? Tony was a showman: he used to throw the disc of dough high up in the air and catch it, a little larger each time for the lift and spin he put on it. For many years after, I'd always look for a "real" Italian pizzaria, where I'd see those pizzas go spinning into the air, but I never saw anyone else throw them. He let us teens hang around his shop, soaking up the smells and an occasional slice, for hours while we listened to "Twist & Shout" on his jukebox. Thanks for bringing back a delicious memory!

I spent a lot of time with my folks at Rocco's too, but before your dad took it over I guess. What year was that? My dad, Ken Hendra, would have been a regular till about 1980. He played a while for Rocco's softball team when Rocco was still pitching.

I think that is about when he bought it. I remember seeing Rocco pitch but only for about a year. I used to go to those games all the time, every Sunday Morning when they would play at Flushing Meadow Park. I even have some home movies. When we got a little older, my sister and I played on the women's team. I wasn't any good, but my sister was! There was Barbara Bell Hayes, Joanie Hansen, LuAnne Fiedler and all the other ladies. I remember some of them wearing Shorts with pantyhose and Candies...to the field...I thought they were soooo coool!!! I also used to watch my Mom and Dad Bowl at Jib Lanes for Rocco's. Dad would give my sister and I each a roll of quarters and tell us not to bug him until it was time to go home! Then I bowled for awhile. We eventually moved the league to Kissena Lanes and then Utopia or Utopia then Kissena...I can't remember!

Gees, you bring up bowling on a Mitch Fiedler thread,(i remember that big hook you used to throw) and it brings back memories of QVAA bowling league on saturday morning, then walking back home from regency lanes (all 12 or 14 lanes)with brad, lanny stopping at the jewish deli on the walk home for a hot dog ( rudman would get like knockwurst or something else i had never heard of) and a knish , and then a half hour later shoveling off the snow at 164 and waiting for somebody to show up to play one on one.

The women's team! After my time, I guess. Too bad - they must have drawn a crowd! ! It was fun when they played at Vleigh Place Park - always the far field, towards Union Turnpike - because it was one of the few times you'd find lots of neighborhood grown-ups all together outside, doing stuff where you could see them. And all the players' kids would be there, most of them from Queen of Peace school. Most of us from PS 164 didn't know those kids or their families so well, so it was a chance to meet that other slice of the neighborhood. Being neither Jewish nor Catholic, attending PS 164 while my parents attended Rocco's, I sort of straddled that divide, and I'm guessing you did as well.

Thanks too for recalling the Kissena and Utopia Lanes. I was trying to remember where we went after we graduated from Regency. Once I got my paper route, I dropped a lot of money on rainy or wintry afternoons at those Lanes...

Hi all - The pizzeria was called Ernestos. It was a family run place...I can still taste the garlic knots...i recall that the father had a booming voice, and the mother died in a hotel fire in puerto rico, one son was sal and i forget his brother's name...what a great pizzeria

The other brother from Ernesto's was Frank.
