Why yes I do remember the dance studio! :-)

I took ballet and tap there, but having 2 left feet impeded my dancing career, so I went across the street for guitar lessons. (And, in true packrat nature, I still have my sheet music and guitar picks!)

Uch! I just love the packrat in you! This is so precious!!!! I just took a look in the baby book that my mother kept for me. Sadly, there is no such receipt for any pair of *my* dance shoes, but there *is* a notation that I took lessons at Progressive Dance Studio, on Vleigh Place, from 1967 to 1968. Unfortunately, the reason I quit so soon is that I was afraid of doing tumbles on their dance mat, during warm ups. I just didn't like the feeling of going upside down! I loved every other part of the class, though, and I've always wished that my mom would've thought of asking the teacher to simply exclude me from that particular warm up. I could've had a career in ballet! No, seriously, I have been an avid Israeli folkdancer for the last 20+ years, and a decent background in ballet/tap/jazz could've been helpful!

I remember that the teacher was Mrs. Gruen. I took ballet there. It's just amazing how we can remember these things! Really was such an important time! And our brains were still forming and the stuff stayed! Elaine Wolff

Hi Elaine -
I'm racking my brain to remember you, but we have two things in common: I also got my jr high "prom" dress from my mom's store - today I would consider it hideous or fabulous. I got two dresses that year - 1960. Both were ice cream colors, one blue, one green, in layers of chiffon, one for prom, and one for grad at the Parson's movie theater.

As for the dance school, yes, it was Progressive then. I also took lessons. I still remember the dance we learned for a recital, and yes I also remember the leotard - a one shouldered, one sleeved, blue thing - kind of a bit back in style.

Great to hear from you, and the fond memories of my mother's store.

hi Jackie.
does it help to tell you that my mom was born in Germany? I think your parents both came from Hungary? My mother came to the states in 1936. My father was Alsatian, but came over before the war. Anyway, we lived right off of Vleigh Place. Also, weren't you neighbors with the Kupferbergs and their cousin Robert, whose last name I am blocking on right now.

It was Studio E, school of Dance and it is now located on Union Tpke!! Eve was the owner (Studio E) and Debbie was one of the teachers. I still have my program from one of my recitals!

Do you remember what year you started with the dance studio? I was there in 1969 when it was called Progressive.

Patricia, I took guitar lessons too with Bill.. and I have the clearest memory of your mom getting angry and the sheet music that Bill gave us once, it was the song Squeezbox.... Mama's got a squeezebox she wears on her chest..... do you remember that??
Delete
Yes, Bill! He got me into a lot of trouble with his music selections. My guitar career finally ended when Bill gave me the sheet music for "Your Mama Don't Dance" (and your daddy don't rock and roll.) My father came home from work one day and I was playing it and singing it at the top of my lungs. He got mad, thought it was disrespectful against parents. He actually went up and spoke to Bill about it, and I wasn't allowed to take lessons from him again.
Delete
Oops, I had the wrong song, but I remember your music lessons ending!!!

Was it on a corner, by any chance, with a greeting room in the front, the dance classroom behind it, and a dressing room in the very back, behind all of that? Did they make you do tumbling as a pre-exercise, before the dance-part of the class? If so, this is the dance school that *I* was sent to. They'd have a driver pick up all the girls in a big black car. If this sounds familiar to you, let me know, and I'll ask my mom if she recalls the name of the place.

Yeah we had to do warm ups, tumbles, and all that stuff. Yes the dressing room was in the back. We used to have dance recitels in 164.
