I received an email from Alice Sondike, daughter-in-law of Mrs. Marjorie Sondike.

She wrote, "She is my mother-in-law and she passed away quite a few years ago. Her friend Mrs. Finkelstein, I believe is alive and well and living in Century Village in Deerfield Beach, Florida."

Holy cow! I loved Mrs. Sondike-she was Very strict and I loved it! I had Mrs. Finkelstein for kindergarten and always used to see her around town as an adult. She too was a lovely lady!

I had Sondike for the third grade, she drove a 55 Pontiac, it was blue and white. I am a car buff.

I especially remember Mrs. Rosenberg in 4th grade. She would play recordings of opera in the background as we worked. Subliminally, I learned several operas that way: "Celeste, Aida!" I seem to remember that she and Mrs. Bromberg were good friends. I also remember Mrs. Whiting in 5th grade who, I believe didn't like me. She had Stanley Eisen (aka Paul Stanley) repeat my last name over and over to "pronounce" it correctly. Sheesh!

Gosh Mrs. Berman didn't like me. I wasn't a quick enough learner of French, my accent wasn't right and my artwork was too sloppy -- I guess. Loved all my other teachers. She's the one scary exception. I remember everybody had "French names". Mine was Paul same as my real name, but I couldn't say "Poll" right. Accent aigu accent grave... Was never any good at French after that though I took it through college.

Hi Paul, I remember those name cards. She gave me a different name since my name couldn't be translated into French (I was so dissappointed!). I remember doing those performances for the parents too. (J'allume c'est bougies!).

I have the same memory of Mrs. Berman. Couldn't stand her. And the feeling was mutual. One time I forgot
my pencil and despite her deskful of them, and to teach me a lesson. she gave me one of those old fashioned crayons that was as round
as your wrist! LOL!!

oh boy I am so sorry to hear about mrs sondike.we had inspection every morning in third grade. we had our hands over our heads with our hankies so she could inspect our nails and neck. She said one day on the dance floor, we would appreciate it. She also made us hold the pen in a way that all our fingers ran acoss the page. She was strict but she remains a woman Ill always love and remember. Mrs Finkelstein was my 4th grade teacher and Im happy shes doing well

this isn't about Mrs. Sondide, but in 6th grade we had "inspection" by Mr. Gulkin. the 2 main things to pass were to have a handkerchief and clean fingernails. if we didn't have one or the other, we got a mark against our names on a sheet hung at the side of the class. i had so many marks they had to make a whole new sheet just for me. when my parents came in on parents-teacher night ad saw that, they weren't upset. they knew i was a fan of Albert Einstein and told Mr. Gulkin that is the reason i'm a little sloppier than average, to emmulate the 'absent-minded-professor look. actually, it was just because i didn't like handkerchiefs and was always doing stuff with my hands so had dirty fingernails.

Yes,I remember inspection,I too had dirt under my nails from repairing things and doing experermenting with stuff. I do not like handkerchiefs but I carried a pack of pocket kleenex at the time.I was in Mr Gulkins class of 64.

if i remember a pack of Kleenex was almost, but not quite as good a thing in the eyes of Mr Gulkin as a real handkerchief. do you remember what we kids called Mr. Gulkin behind his back (his nickname)?
