- About Me:
- My reminiscences, written three years ago, appear on this site. For 10 years, I have been doing what I believe I was meant to do: I teach, advise and coach at a beautiful private boarding school ( 9-12) .with an international student body. My wife is an outstanding theatre educator and the current chair of our school's sizeable arts department. We live on the campus and are responsible for the dormitory life of 48 boys. We also share our house with three cats. I teach english - reading and writing. I am adviser to our student-produced weekly newspaper (now in its 106th year of publication). I regularly write features and profiles for the school's professionally-designed magazine.
My wife and I have led student exchange trips to Russia, twice, to London, twice. We are also involved in a longstanding exchange with a high school in Germany.
My wife is, like me, a native New Yorker but we met in Washington, DC.
We return to New York - a four hour drive - several times each year where we visit with relatives and with our young grandson.
My two sisters: Jane (Applebaum) Barry and Amy (Applebaum) Hutchings,
succeeded me at Queens Valley School 164. Jane lives in Park Slope, Brooklyn, and Amy lives in Rhinebeck, NY. I remain in touch with Ken Schwarz '51 (London), Peter Ornstein,(Chapel Hill, NC) and recently had a reunion with Carolyn (Kopperl) Bensinger (Boston).
Post- P.S. 164, I went to Parsons JHS, Forest Hills High School (1958), Washington & Lee University (1962). and much later earned an MA at Johns Hopkins University.

I don't think I ever knew you, but I did know your sisters Amy and Jane. Amy, in fact, was my cousin Ann Kumock North's first friend when she moved into the house at 138-11 76 Avenue at age 7 -- just down the block from you (the "same" semi-detached house as yours at the end of the next grouping). I remember Amy well at that young age and also know exactly which house you lived in!
I am writing to you not only because your "international" involvement interests me and reminds me of my own intercultural peregrinations throughout the years but also because these reminiscences about the past are very moving. They do indeed provide us with a "frame" that is even greater than the small world that we have each occupied on our own -- especially when a small "thread" of memory can even validate our existence all the more. In this vein, please tell your sister Jane that I remember the day she sang "Ave Maria" at a Parsons Junior High assembly. I was so impressed that I still think of her today when I hear this piece.
By the way, I also knew Carolyn Kopperl, who was in my junior high school class. She was a great musician!
