PS 164 Alumni

I recently found someone from my 3rd grade class on facebook who hasnt joined this site yet.We are trying to figure out which one of these ladies is the real Mrs Sondike...........the teacher from
3-2 in 64 or
3-1in 61???
Both of these pics are in class photos here. Also if anyone has a class pic from Mrs Sondike in 67,, it would be most appreciated!

Here's an odd story about Mrs. Sondike: when I was in 3rd grade, I believe, I made a painting of a graveyard at night out west. There were cactii and tombstones, and a big crescent moon. I made little squiggles to look like writing on each marker. I was proud of it. We did these paintings for a showing at the Queens County Bank. Turned out everyone's painting was displayed but mine...

One morning shortly after I finished the painting, my teacher, Mrs. Schmidt, brought me to a small room where Mrs. Sondike was sitting with my painting. When we were alone, she began asking me questions about my home life, how my parents disciplined me, and such. I became very defensive as she kept probing. I just thought graveyards were cool. Finally, she let me go. But I never saw that painting again.

So I'm thinking that Mrs. Sondike must have been the de facto guidance counselor back then. As well as the teacher who led the assemblies, in my day at least. I remember we always had to sing "Good Morning to You" when she came into our 3rd grade room. Very imposing, as I recall, though not on my bitches list. But I stayed away from her after that.

That is too funny. I can definitely see her doing that. Yes I remember singing to her and the dreaded inspection . She was definitely on my "bitches" list, thought I didnt call it that.lol At this point in my life though, she's the teacher I actually fondly remember most of all, so she must've done something right. Did u know that paul Stanley from KSS and rt Garfunkle also had her?

No, but I'd be interested to hear their stories. ;-) I can see where she would have helped jump start young musical minds. Wasn't she the one played piano at our assemblies? Or did she conduct our songs? I forget, but seem to remember she led those chorales somehow. She was definitely a presence at the school.

Im not sure if she played piano but I remember her standing up there , maybe on a chair?with her big boobs conducting the school song.lol Im pretty sure there was a picture of her on a kiss website in his class pic. "Arthur" (garfunkle) was in the same class. Id love to hear their stories. Do u remember inspection???

Im looking at some of the other comments. I remember sitting with our hands folded forever and then we we raised our hands, our elbows had to stay on the table.

Yup - your description brought that right back into focus for me: she was up front - way up front - onstage, leading the singing. ;-) I vaguely remember inspections, but we clearly didn't have to meet the expectations you did. Those little details, like "put a nickle on your wrist without it falling off" and keeping your elbows on the table when you raised your hand, seem vaguely ominous to me now. She wouldn't have appreciated a little ADHD-addled class clown like me, I think.

Left hand pulls hair away from ear for fingernail & ear inspection fingers resting just above the ear; right fingernails on right shoulder. Can't ever forget it! She was my favorite teacher! I had a horrible time in second grade. We had a series of subs for months as the assigned teacher was rumored to have had a nervous breakdown. Finally ended up with Mrs. Horowitz. I have had nightmares about that woman ever since. The last day of second grade we met our new 3rd grade teacher. It was Mrs. Sondike & she taught us a little ditty to learn to spell "Mississippi". I was smitten, relieved, and looking forward to third grade.

BTW, she played the piano beautifully in the assembly room for years, and frequently accompanied the Glee Club.

For the sake of history, I'm including this page from the class of '69 autograph book that I found last week while taking apart my parents home on 70th Road before they sell it. Her name is Marjorie, once and for all.

I have the same exact autograph!! lol
