I went home. Father Knows Best re-runs started 12:30, (WABC Channel 7 - the show's original run ended 1960) we had to be back at school 1pm so... watch as much of the (my favorite) program (Bud Andersoon was a role model) as possible. 12:40 or 12:45 was pushing it. In my 7 years of going to 164 I was unaware there was a cafeteria (well, maybe at the time i "sort of knew"). Yumiko's mention is the first I heard of it.

If you ask me where the cafeteria was, I would not be able to tell you. I must have found out from some of the kids about it and about the Wednesday "ice cream" dessert menu. We lined up with a tray and a plate divided into sections....I am not even sure if there was a choice. Perhaps someone who ate there on a regular basis will join the discussion. There was a lunch money envelope too just like the envelope we had for the milk money.

I remember that it was a TREAT when my parents allowed me to eat lunch in school. Yes, I think it was twice a month...not very often, but I had fun!!!!. Then I remember always taking a friend home for lunch on a Friday, with permission, of course. I was also a milk monitor...way back, remember the little wired-type baskets that held 12 or so little milk containers, yep I remember there were always 2 monitors going to pick-up the milk from the cafeteria. Can you believe what we can remember!!! KUDOS to us ALL!!!!

I remember loving being that milk monitor -I think it was the only time I was ever in the cafeteria. That little metal case was so cute! I remember going in there and 6th graders would be in there and I would think they were so grown up -I think I was in awe!

Almost forgot about that little metal tray and how the milk containers fit - prob 1st time thought about it in 40 years...and yes, it was a "good" fit...

Milk monitor...somehow I don't remember who the milk monitors were in my class.
Did every class in every grade have milk monitors or just the upper grades? Can't remember how the milk was brought to our classrooms. I remember that the teacher sometimes brought cookies, like Oreos, for milk time. yummmm...how much did we have to pay per week? Didn't we use a small orange yellowish envelope to bring in the money? Or was that for the cafeteria lunch?

If Cindy didn't bring up the name "Milk Monitors" iwould never have remembered but remember clearly. the cafeteria was an alien place as i went home for lunch everyday although seem to remember being "milk-monitor' a few times. i was, however an "eraser-monitor' (not sure if the word "monitor" part of the job) - would bring the erasers to a room on the 1st floor near the office, place them on a vacuum machine to suck the chalk out....

Peter, Peter, those disgusting vacuum machines...WOWOW, those were probably toxic, (well that explains a lot), and we inhaled all the chalk fumes...It is great to have these little strolls down memory lane!!! Take care, CINDY

cindy,
i didn't like that eraser-vacuuming job; noisy and scary in the vacuum room (which might have mosty beeen a storage closet). the "job" i remember liking was blackboard- erasing (although if the erasers were not recently 'vacuumed' you couldn't erase that well...

I walked home every day. That would be unheard of in this day and age. I remember when my brother who was 2 years older than me graduated, I walked alone and was terrified of encountering stray dogs -which I DID encounter a lot. Claire

I didn't live close enough, to school, that I could walk home for lunch and be back in time for class to resume, so I stayed in school for lunch. But, over the years, I have had scattered memories of eating, both, in the cafeteria (I brought my own lunch) and in the classroom. I could never remember why I ate in both places. I didn't recall that there were options, like those you just mentioned. Thank you for bringing greater clarity to my memories! ~Janet

being the guy to give out the milk to the milk monitors was the best job. i remember schlepping the milk cases into the lunchroom from 77 ave. It was great when it snowed, then all you had to do was slide it. millie was so nice to me when I was there. always offering some type of breakfast. Cindy, those metal milk holders were the best. Why didn't momy ever get that for us.
nothing like going home for lunch too. Grandma would be there and make the best lunches. Watching password and eating lunch. that was the best!!!!
