i remember the song too.. i was only in the school from k to 3rd grade but i remember

we wore  white shirt blue skirt to auditorium  :)

and singing .. we learned the school song ..we pledged to the flag and we sang  i remember singing some song called i love the mountains i love the fountains (i'm not sure thats the name but i know those words were in it lol ) and this land is your land and many others :)

my children thought it was funny that we had a school song ..

we also had inspections the teacher checked your nails necks and to see if you had a hanky or tissues

girls were not allowed to wear pants in school .. so if it was cold and you wore them under your dress to school you had to remove them before you entered lol

i have no class pictures as my father passed away when i was 9 of cancer .. but somewhere i have graduation from k when i find them i will post them ..

this site brings back many old memories  :)

When I was in third grade in 1955, Mrs. Emeric was the only teacher who did those inspections of nails and checking for hankies.  She also would examine our scalps for lice which infuriated my mother who complained to Mr. Karow, the principal, and that stopped the scalp inspections.

Mrs. Emeric used to call her students "non compis mentis" if we couldn't answer a question, another unpleasant habit Mr. Karow ended up forbidding.  I don't think she was anyone's favorite teacher :-).

Remember the "inspections" which might have been called "cleanliness" as everything was categorized in those days.  I was THE sloppiest kid in the class, always forgetting my handkerchief and even having dirty fingernails.  On a sheet each kid had a mark next to his name if he had dirty fingernails, forgotten handkerchief and I believe a dirty neck.  Mine was literally off the chart and they had to start a whole new sheet of paper for me only.  Mr. Gulkin at the time ended up giving a lecture to the class about how to properly take a shower, clean fingernails and the importance of a handkerchief because of germs.  Mr. Gulkin was called "The Science Teacher" so any technical information was respected by us kids.  And, having graduated P.S. 164 in 1965, I vaguely remember Mrs. Emeric who was still there when I started Kindergarten 1959.  Please read the "choreograpy" of the school song which is detailed in a February 2009 post earlier in this thread.

Mr. Gulkin was the teacher in charge of the stamp club...I'd forgotten all about the clubs.  Mrs. Hoffman did the sewing club, and to this day I use the stitches she taught us.  I know there were other clubs, but can't remember what they were.

Do not remember the clubs (maybe vaguely).  Mr. Gulkin became a friend of our family and visited our house - even after we moved to Great Neck in '65.

It finishes:

Lift your voices

sing her praises

Cheer forever more

And rejoice that you've attended

Ahhh-Documents! It was not until years later that I realized how extraordinary Mr. Karow was as an educator. I can still recite virtually all of the excerpts we learned to this day! And now I understand them, in the context of the times they were written, and in the context of our years in public school, less than a decade after the end of WWII. He wanted us to know and understand the values of our country, the country for which so many died, and which no doubt affected the families of his students. So many families, mine included, lost someone in the war.

I also understand them in the context of our current political melee. I guess Donald Trump didn't learn much about his country in the hothouse environment of Jamaica Estates. If anyone needs David Karow now, it's Donald Trump!

Remember the animated public service announcements from the tv of our childhood?

Ohhh- I may not know a lot of things, but one thing I can state,

Both native born and foreign born have made our country great!

In solidarity,

Bonnie

When I tell friends the story of the Documents and Mr. Karow, I point out that there were three grades of kids memorizing those documents, with typically 3 classes of 30+ plus kids in each - almost 300 kids in all - and he listened to each of them recite those documents each and every week. For how many years? It was an amazing level of commitment on his part.  Without a doubt, they helped mold my values and character. And you're right: when I listen to Trump, it's clear he lacks that foundation. But then, so do most people. It was a unique educational experiment - and we were fortunate to be part of it.
