PS 164 Graduation Year: (If you left before, use the year you would have graduated.)
1969
About Me:
I attended P.S. 164 from Kindergarten through about the middle of 6th grade, when my father was transferred to a job in CT. Our family lived on Union Turnpike until about 1964, and then we moved to 72nd Avenue. Our neighbors were Rose and Jack Garfunkel (Art's parents). The remainder of my education was in CT. I graduated from Hall High School (1975) in W. Hartford CT, The University of Connecticut (1979) and The University School of Law (1992). My sister is Vickie Baird (1965 graduate of PS 164) and my cousins are Janice Montner (PS 164 - 1970) and Sue Montner (PS 164 - 1972). I am an attorney in private practice. My field of law is intellectual property and technology. Been married for many years. No children, but have many wonderful nieces, nephews and godchildren. I'm
a Big Sister to a 14 year old girl with the Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Name of your 6th grade teacher:
Mrs. Goldblatt
My teachers were:

Kindergarten - Mrs. Finkelstein and Mrs.Goldberg
First Grade - Mrs. Berman
Second Grade - Mrs. Posner
Third Grade - Mrs. Sondike
Fourth Grade - Mrs. Fleming, then Mr. Lohr took over the class. I recently met a young man in Hartford, CT named Erik Lohr. I asked him if he was related to a Mr. Lohr who was my fourth grade teacher at P.S. 164. To make a long story short, it turns out that Mr. Lohr is Erik's grandfather (who is no longer with us). Erik sent a photograph of Mr. Lohr to me, which I posted here on June 1, 2009. I welcome you to share any memories you may have about our Mr. Lohr. Lon Kirschner has Mr. Lohr's signature in his class autograph book!
Fifth Grade - Miss Reilly who got married and became Mrs. Reid that year
Sixth Grade - Mrs. Goldblatt

My best friend was Michelle Ginden who, I am very sad to say, passed away in about 1986.

Diane,
You took great pictures yourself too!
When did you take the pictures of the neighborhood?
I got there around 10:30am on the day of the reunion and slowly walked around 2 hours or so. A lot of Orthodox people walking too. I must have been the only non-Orthodox walking around that morning. I was thinking of going past the Park Drive East playground closer to the lake but decided against it (in other words, chickened out because I was all by myself). Wish I took more pictures...

I looked on Lon Kirschner's page. I scanned that kindergarten class photo. I am NOT in it. But I'm positive I was in that class. That year, I was sick a lot. In fact, I was in the hospital for 6 weeks. So I probably was out the day they took that photo.

diane,
"tushie" is spelled with a "U" (realize you are only 1/2 jewish...haha). when we drove near that "smell" our family used to say "rotten eggs!" i have pictures from Adventures Inn late 50's/early 60's. i like how all the men watching their kids on rides in those days wore dress pants even to Adventures Inn. vickie reminding me of the 'rotten-egg' smell was the 2nd best memory i've gotten from the 164 site, the best was from a classmate 6 years older remembering my father's 1952 MG parked on the street. her father liked it but was too conservative to drive anything but a 4-door Oldsmobile sedan. anyway, some people like stuff from the olden days, some not so much. a few of my best friends whom i could have shared about 100 stories with barely saiid "hey how are you doing" - no interest in reminiscing...others went as far as talking about what make and model of car their father drove but liking ours more...

Diane, Is it possible you are thinking of someone else? I didn't live in an apartment. I lived in a house on the other side of Main Street from the school (on 76th road.) I did belong to Girl Scouts for awhile, so that's possible.

Hi Diane!

Yes, I think it is Dan.
I was just looking at some of the photos of the reunion and saw his photo and his name on of them. Thank you!

Also, in kindergarten, I believe it was Mrs. Goldberg. For kindergarten, I had Finkelstein and Goldberg. We probably were in the same class. I had Posner in 2nd grade also.

No. Mr. Hoff was a friendly, gentle guy. Everyone liked him. He once invited my friend and I down to his basement. Saw his ham radio. And all the plaques and trophies from his photojournalism career. BUT, my next door neighbor, Mr. Garcia and his wife...they were lawn fanatics, and were evil. They hated kids. Our house was attached to theirs. We were always mortally afraid of our Pennsy Pinkie ball accidentally going in their yard. We almost never spoke to them. Once my friend and I lit a firecracker on the ground in my driveway. Mr. Garcia accused us of deliberately throwing it at him. I was angry, knocked on his door, and told his wife that we did not throw the firecracker at him. She said next time they see us do anything like that, they will tell the police to give us a JD card (juvenile delinquent). Nice people, huh? Ivi Gilbert was down the street, but not on the side street. I was friends with her older brother Lanny. My sister Beth had a friend Ellie Roher....a couple doors down from you.

diane,
glad you liked my Park Drive East photo. i love the pic of you and Vickie you posted. Yumiko (asian woman from California who i've been emaling for a year) said she spoke with you briefly at the reunion. did you speak with Rick Hendra with whom i also have been in contact? i have many other photos from the olden days and hope to post at some point. Vickie reminded me of something i never would have forgotten forever - the "rotten egg" smell on the Van Wyck as you got closer to the middle of Flushing.

Hey, Diane. Sorry for not replying sooner. I did get those photos. Thanks very much. That house does look like my house, but I didn't have the stonework. On Friday, July 17th, my family and I will be going to the McCartney concert on Friday, July 17th in the evening. During the day, we plan to spend time in the old neighborhood. I will check out my old house, and see if it has the stonework. Yes, I believe that girl was Toni Barken.
Down the street, on my side of the block, there was Lanny Gilbert. He was a friend of mine. One year younger. His younger sister was Ivi. Further down was Ruben Perlmutter. His younger sister was Janet. On your side of the block was Lenny Markowitz. If you remember, he used to do tuneups on cars as a hobby. Charged a very low fee. He was the "bachelor" on the block. On your side, but closer to Main St. was Steven Gabay. And the first house at the corner of Main and 72nd was the Lums. 2 kids. Kenny Lum...a grade behind us, and his younger sister Gloria. He used to mix up chemicals with his chemistry set and made his sister drink them...lol. Also, across from you...do you remember Mr. Charlie Hoff? He always was putting new sod on his lawn. They called him the " mayor of 72 Ave." Used to be a famous photographer for the Daily News and Look Magazine. He actually took the famous photo of the Hindenburg zeppelin that blew up .
