I ws in the class of '56 and Mrs. Simon was my favorite sub teacher. (She wasn't teaching full-time in those days.) She created a fun learning environment. Fast forward to the summer when Paul Simon toured with Bob Dylan. My wife and went to see them at Shoreline in Mtn View,CA. My wife talked me out of sending a message backstage to Paul Simon. She cringed when I wondered if he and I are were the only 2 guys at the venue who were Bar Mitzvahed at the Jewish Center of KGH. True confession, while proud of my KGH roots I was there to see Dylan.

I just joined and am a little late in the game. I had Mrs. Simon in fifth grade in 1961 and stayed in touch through college. My mom and she had become friendly and she (mom) taught a few art classes for Belle over the years. I have the Jerry Landis autograph from our 6th grade picnic (in the cafeteria due to rain). Another interesting anecdote...Paul taught guitar to my JHS boyfriend, Alan Kachel. Alan also attended 164 but we didn't connect until 63.

Mrs. Simon was our neighbor, along with sons Paul and Eddie.
She was not my teacher but I had her for Home Ec. We made aprons.
Alan Kachel, known as Lannie, was also my neighbor.
We all lived on 70th Rd between 137 and 141 St.
We both took guitar lessons from Paul.
I think he charged $2.00 a lesson.
Then I took lessons from little brother Eddie.
He said he wouldn't continue teaching me unless I cut my nails. I quit the lessons.
Last time I saw Lannie, we carpooled to Queens College summer school together back in 1969.

Hi rhona. Lannie and I met up at the bowne reunion in the mid 80s.

Mrs. Simon and the connections to her son have remained pretty vivid for me. I have his autograph as Jerry Landis. Coincidentally my younger son has an internship with the organizer of the recent tribute in central park and we have a picture Im sorry I am unable to enclose at the moment since he's away for the weekend.


How have you been and where to you live? I live in Park Slope in Brooklyn with my husband and younger son when he's not in college at bu. My older son is 38 and has a little girl. The boys are 18 years apart. Yes, I am crazy, but my younger one, Daniel, is from my 2nd marriage. My email is berryl44@verizon.net if you'd like to stay in touch and catch up.

I can certainly remember Simon performing at our dance...was it the graduation dance in 62?

As for teachers, sadly my strongest memory is of the despicable (to me) Mrs Greenblatt. She used to make fun of me, was a harsh and angry woman. I think it was 2nd grade.

Of Mr Goldmacher (6th), I retain fonder but less clear memories.

I had Ms. Simon when Mr. Eddleson got sick and she replaced him. I got to know her and Paul very well as they lived up th block on 70th road in Kew gardens. I was in the class of 1960.

Nice to hear from you Marty.  I had Mrs. Simon as a substitute teacher in 1st grade at what became Campbell Junior High School, and then again as a regular teacher in 5th grade.  We became very close and stayed in touch through my college years.  I was friendly with Alan Kachel, Beth Arditty and Cele Savits who lived across the Street from the Simons family.  I graduated 164 in June of 1962 (50 years ago-OMG!) and went on to Campbell, Bowne, and Pratt Institute and am residing in Park Slope Brooklyn.

Paul came to our graduation picnic that was rained out and was held in the cafeteria (I can still smell the hard boiled eggs and minestrone soup) and am lucky to have his autograph as Jerry Landis (when he and Garfunkel were Tom and Jerry).

Mrs. Simon filled in for almost all of my fifth grade year when our regular teacher, Mrs. Whiting, had to go out for surgery.  Mrs. Simon was a lovely woman.  For whatever reason, I recall her driving a red and white Ford, maybe a 1958, down 77th Avenue each afternoon as I was on my way to my home on Park Drive East.  Paul and Art came several times to play in the auditorium.  They were still performing as Tom and Jerry.

Hello All! My brother had Mrs. Simon for first grade the same year I had Miss ??? for third grade. We lived on 152nd(?) street. Mrs. Simon invited us up to the house so we walked. What I remember most is that she all of the gold records on the wall leading up the staircase. She was a very proud mama.
